  1. Hello,

we can add some non-printed media starring Pierre Albuisson thank to his excellence and the presidency of Art du Timbre Gravé association.

During the short lived TV Timbres experience (2005-2008), Gauthier Toulemonde, Timbres Magazine's editor in chief, filmed Albuisson in a series of video in 2006: at home (in Charolais, South of today's Burgundy) in his office with his own press, and then at a traditional printer in Paris.

For a few months TV Timbres is back on Youtube. Two videos of the meeting with Albuisson are now available:
    - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJQZPRk7fpw

The one at the Parisian printer is very interesting concerning printing technics: you watch the worker put as many thick shred of papers under some parts of the printed sheet in order to have the results the engraver wished to perform. A very minutious, repetitive and careful task.

These videos were filmed at the height of the intaglio lobbying by Timbres Magazine and the engravers to force the French philatelic service to continue issuing as many engraved stamps as before.

The videos were put together on a dvd, entitled "Des courriers très spéciaux", alongside postal adventures of Mr Toulemonde in the French Guyanese forest or to an Arctic post office.

Adrian, if you wish the precise content of this DVD, I can watch it again and propose you an index of the content.

Thank you for your work on engravers,
    Sebastien

  2. Thanks, Sébastien, for these great video links. I hadn't seen these before. If there's more engravers content on the dvd then yes, I'd love to know. I might see if I can find a copy somewhere.

  3. I'll try to browse the dvd during the week because I don't remember if the essay printing at the Parisian printer was edited or - for now - lost in the limbs of the internet.

The "Courriers très spéciaux" dvd is still on sale on Timbres Magazine's shop: http://www.timbro.fr/fr/39-dvd

During the wait, if you don't know it, you could search into journalist Pierre Jullien's blog. He's friend of many stamp artists and published many of their personal creation - Art du Timbre Gravé engravings, seasons card, etc.

  4. On the DVD, the report on Albuisson is youtube video AJQZPRk7fpw I quoted above: a visit at his home and office in Charolais.

To non French listeners, here is a summary:
Une journée chez le maître graveur Pierre Albuisson (Tv Timbres, 2006, 14m24s):
    - Pierre Albuisson describes the landscapes and the Charolais region.
    - Gauthier Toulemonde tells a short biography of PA.
    - PA speaks about the home he restaured and promoting steel engraving, both are a way to insure an heritage to the next generation.
    - In the atelier upstairs: the handpress (machine taille-douce Ledeuil), the office. He presents an essay of the press.
    - He engraves while describing how he works (roles of the hands).
    - The engraving tools (burins), how they are hold and chosen.
    - Other tools to sharpen the burins, verify their cutting angle before sharpening accordingly.
    - PA presents a commercial idea: when he creates and engraves a whole stamp, he designs a special original engraving, only 500 printed with the first day cancelled stamp underneath. Then he explains how this is linked to Art du Timbre Gravé and a wish to make sure stamp imagery be different from all the images of today's medias.
    - Some stamps by Albuisson are shown as a closing credit.

For now, it seems the report following Albuisson at his traditional printer in Paris isn't viewable :(
